Linn Winters preached the Law lawfully, but the absence of the Gospel leaves us in the pit of despair. This is what the Law does: it either puffs us up when we delude ourselves into thinking we are pulling it off (or compare ourselves to others), or it drives us to despondency and anguish.
Linn does the latter very well. We are crushed by our condition, we are shown our state...But we are not shown our Saviour. Show us the way, the truth, and the life. Show us Jesus.
Preach the Gospel.

Michael Ritzman has put it perfectly: I've heard so many sermons over the decades which are true so far as they go but leave you with nowhere to go and nothing to do but be aware of your unworthiness. Guilty, dead, without hope, just aware of failing: They leave you in the pit, in Sheol you could say. Then the Gospel? No, usually the same preachers then assiduously ignored the Gospel, or underplay it so much that you would miss the good news so the Light does not shine. Yes we are sinners, but boy do we all need the Gospel to lift us up out of the pit! Who shall save us from all this truth about how sinful we are? Praise God our Lord Jesus Christ does by what He has done for us! There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus! By all means show us the Law to reveal our wickedness, BUT - the verbal eraser - preach the Gospel, amen! Well put Michael! Soli Deo Gloria! (to God alone be the glory!)

I sense that Mr. Winters is feeling his way to an answer to this question himself. Let us pray that God would bring him to the answer.

At my church the pastor got up a while back and said "serve or find another church". It made me very uncomfortable. I'm in a Bible study class upstairs that is very small in spite of the fact that 1000's attend over the weekend. Then the during the last service I attended they announced a Mayberry Bible study and the power point had Andy Griffith or some such thing. I turned to the lady beside me and she said "Well what does Andy Griffith have to do with the Bible?" The people behind us leaned up and explained that the episodes were written with some whatever in mind. It doesn't make sense to me. I was so ashamed. I have to find another church, but I just want to cry. They are so proud to have all these new people attending as it continues to grow. I know that it's time to leave and make room for the people who want to come in. I sure don't want to stay.
