You expressed my own sentiments well when you were discussing the tone of the "Papa" figure in "The Shack"
I noticed it more, however, in "Papa's" interactions with "Jesus". I was very uncomfortable with her good-natured ribbing(ridicule)of him after he spilled the pancake batter etc. And he just sat there and took it and said "Isn't she greeat!" a lot (If you can hear this in your mind in a voice that sounds nothing like Andy Warhol, you're a better man than I am.)
To me this put it solidly out of the realm of God the Father in a more palatable form (for our hero) into a really bad bad image of God. I mean she really did this emasculating, infantilizing thing both to Jesus and to Mac. Is this domineering mother figure god really something ANY Christian would need to experience?
I personally had a really strong negative visceral reaction to the suggestion that these characters represented my God and my Savior. I felt like screaming "Get out of the shack, you little mama's boy! Run! Before these creatures devour you!"
But, a lot of Christians, whom I respect, and who deserve far more respect than I do, love the book. I really can't imagine how. Grudgingly admitting you couldn't find false theology is one thing, but to be willing to have these characters represent the Father to whom you have prayed, and the Savior who went to the cross you and the Spirit who bears witness of Him in your life. Ugh! I just don't GET it!
